Ken Neely’s Hickory Bar-B-Que opened it’s doors on March 3, 2008 by Ken and Maylon Neely. Although the restaurant opened in 2008, Ken Neely was never a stranger to the bar-b-que business. The son of Jim Neely, the owner of “Interstate Bar-B-Que”, Ken Neely is the product of “A Tradition of Excellence” when it comes to preparing and serving good barbeque.
As Ken so humbly states, “The Tradition Continues…” when speaking of the business, he realizes the training received from working with his father would enable him to succeed as a restaurant entrepreneur. After graduating from Memphis State University in 1982, Ken moved to California for a couple of years. In 1984 he returned and started working in the family business with Jim, his father. The hours were long, the tasks were multiple, and the expectations were high. Jim Neely insisted on excellent prepared food, outstanding customer service, and keeping the secret sauce in the family. Ken along with other family members strived to make sure that every customer’s experience at Interstate Bar-B-Que was enjoyable and memorable; Just as Jim Neely desired.
However, Ken had desires in the barbeque industry that extended outside of the traditional business model of Interstate Bar-B-Que. Those desires prompted Ken and Maylon to step out from under the well established Interstate umbrella to open Ken Neely’s Hickory Bar-B-Que. Ken is grateful for his experiences gained from working with his father and hopes to prove in his own way; that he too, is capable of operating in the tradition set by Jim Neely.
Ken works side by side with his wife Maylon who also is no stranger to the business of customer satisfaction. Maylon, a graduate of Kansas University, opened her first business baking cakes and pies for area businesses. Maylon’s Bakery location was ideally suited for the duel family business adventurers. However, after relocating the family home, the bakery’s location proved to be a disadvantage for the family and the bakery business was dissolved. However, Maylon continued to make her mouth-watering desserts for businesses.
Now, Ken and Maylon have combined their entrepreneur greatness into the family owned Ken Neely’s Hickory Bar-B-Que. Maylon quickly adapted to the barbeque environment and helps to run the family business with the heart and desire passed to Ken from Jim Neely. She also adds to the environment by providing the model for the love and decorum,
in their slogan “Love is Spoken Here”. Her compassion for building relationships with customers equals Ken’s desire to provide the best barbeque this side of the Mississippi River and the surrounding area. So come in and enjoy Ken Neely’s Hickory Bar-B-Que delicious foods, relaxed atmosphere and experience the love that’s spoken here or call.
